Endocrinology Research Introduced
Endocrinology has to do with the body's endocrine system, as well as its function and any abnormalities and diseases that affect it. Endocrinologists spend the majority of their time attending to patients affected by endocrine system disorders; the endocrine system is made up of organs that release hormones which influence other bodily functions. Examples of endocrine organs are the ovaries and testes, the pituitary gland, the thyroid and the pancreas.
Those specializing in endocrinology are skilled physicians, who have finished medical school along with four years work in internal medicine, pediatrics or gynecology. Then, an endocrinologist will spend a few more years in training. Not all doctors who receive this training go on to care directly for patients; some work in theoretical or research areas. However, most who train in this area do so with the aim to practice clinical endocrinology and to care for patients.
To say that endocrinologists treat endocrine system disorders is factually correct, but very broad. These specialists typically treat people for diseases such as diabetes; there is a focus on gaining an understanding of how the body regulates insulin and these doctors treat patients through a variety of means. Other conditions treated by endocrinologists include disorders of the thyroid, which can affect all of the body's other functions. For instance, a thyroid condition can cause problems with the production of progesterone or estrogen, reducing a woman's fertility. Some endocrinologists further specialize in fertility medicine. Some endocrinology researchers look at hormone depletion as one of aging's normal consequences, but they work to negate the effects.
Pediatric endocrinology treats children with metabolic disorders, especially diabetes. Pediatric endocrinologists also focus on issues with growth; some kids don't have sufficient growth hormones and may need supplements or glandular adjustments to correct it. Endocrinology can overlap with some other medical specialties- for example, an oncologist and endocrinologist may treat people that have endocrine gland cancers. Obstetricians and gynecologists may also address female hormone issues. Diabetics with kidney damage may need the help of a nephrologist; and sometimes, endocrinologists are the only doctors that can treat certain issues.
